Not long after we introduced the Single Ended eXperimenter's (S.E.X.) headphone/integrated amplifier kit we found that many of our customers were using the marvelous Sennheiser 580/600/650 series of headphones with their S.E.X. amp. You can see one satisfied S.E.X. amp and Sennheiser headphone user here. One of the hottest tips for Sennheisers is to upgrade the stock cable. And so we realized there was a need for a high quality cable with a right angle termination to fit the horizontally mounted headphone jack of the S.E.X. amp. In our search for cables we came across a custom cable maker who could build just what we and our fellow bottleheads needed. The Bottleheadphone Cable starts with a Cardas headphone cable with Cardas-made plugs for connection to the headphones. It is a shielded, lightweight, flexible, 4 conductor, design, to which we have a very rugged Neutrik right angle stereo phone plug added. The 10 foot cable is finished with a handsome Tech-flex jacket and is priced at $170 plus $7 shipping. It will fit Sennheiser models 580, 600 and 650. These cables are assembled in the US by a Cardas trained technician using Cardas quadeutectic solder. All standard cables are covered by a 30 day return policy. 15 and 20 foot cables may be special ordered for an additional $48 and $94 respectively. Check on availability of the special order lengths first, by calling us at 360-697-1936.

Bottleheadphone Cables are custom built to order. Delivery averages one week.

Bottleheadphone cable mini review

Posted by Tom G. on May 04, 2005 at 09:24:22

For those using Sennheiser headphones listen up. I got my Bottleheadphone cable in the mail yesterday and plugged it in. Now let me preface by saying that my previous beliefs is that wire is wire is wire. Boy was I wrong! One of my only complaints (and I had to dig deep to find one) with my S.E.X. and HD 600 combo was the way drums sounded. To me they were “grainy”, “clipped” and sort of distorted. This was especially evident during intense cymbal usage. Vocals, guitars, horns and bass always sounded natural. This phenomenon was actually getting better with time as components got some break-in. But when I plugged in my Bottleheadphone cable the drums smoothed out and sounded clean without affecting the other instruments in the mix. And the build quality of the cable reminds me of mil spec components. The right angle connector is built like a tank.

Now, can someone explain to me how headphone wire and interconnects for that matter make the sound change? Go ahead and get as technical (or not) as you like. I’m an engineer by trade but nobody has ever been able to explain this to me. I suspect it has something to do with capacitance, resistance and perhaps velocity.

Thanks to Eileen for e-mailing me that the cables were back in stock. Thanks to DIY cable for making this “tough as nails” setup. And of course thanks Doc for making it all happen.
