Reference Discs

We have had the honor and privilege of building custom gear for some of the finest recording and mastering engineers in the industry, the guys at Paul Stubblebine Mastering, Coast Recorders and Spartan Recording. I thought some of you might enjoy the phenomenal quality of the reference masters we are allowed to use at Bottlehead for evaluation of our designs, so I have arranged to make the release versions of some of our favorites available here at Bottlehead.com. Since these recordings are used on our own system for evaluation I believe you will find them particularly useful for showing off your own Bottlehead gear. And since Doc picked 'em you also have the guarantee that these are not audiophool dreck! The music has to make me want to listen again and again, or I won't put it up here.

enjoy,

Doc B.

Jacqui Naylor The Color Five

Here's Jacqui's latest, a combination of five standards, five original songs and five acoustic smashes, where Jacgui sings a rock tune while the band plays a jazz counter melody in the background and vice versa. In this album the gang really starts to show the way a band that has been together for a while can so easily slip into a groove. Released on Jacqui's own Rubystar label, the performances are tighter and smoother than ever, and Jacqui's voice is just sooo nice.

The recording was done at Coast Recorders at the 1340 Mission recording and mastering facility in San Francisco. Coast is a Bill Putnam designed studio and the largest recording studio in The City. Michael Romanowski and Paul Stubblebine recorded the tracks. This session was also my absolutely fabulous 50th birthday party, which you can read about here.

Jacqui Naylor Live East/West

This offering is a live double album release by Jacqui. Last year Jacqui wowed crowds on both coasts with her superbly trained voice. This two CD set features performances from two of Jacqui's favorite venues, Yoshi's in Oakland, CA and Birdland in NY. Pianist, co-writer and arranger Art Khu is a major league performer in his own right, and their collaborative effort known as acoustical smashing, in which Art lays down a jazz/rock tune to which Jacqui sings a rock/jazz counterpoint, is not to be missed. Listen for Jacqui's power and the easy way she flows through her vocal range, Art's equally powerful and texturally dense solos, and also for some other knockout talent like Jon Evans on bass and Josh Jones on drums. The recordings and mix were done by Spartan Recording, and Michael Romanowski of Paul Stubblebine Mastering did a beautiful job of mastering both CDs for Jacqui's Ruby Star Records label.

Art Khu - Reconciliation
Simply put, Art is an amazing pianist. Having had my fingers crossed for more than a year that he would do an instrumental recording, I was delighted to find that he had just released his new album on the Ruby Star Records label, entitled Reconciliation. If you like the intricate solos Art plays on Jacqui's albums you'll love this nice long drink of fluid expression by Art, backed up by two well known and highly regarded West Coast artists, bassist Ron Belcher and drummer Babatunde Lea.

Recorded and mixed by David R at On The Moon Studios

Mastered by Michael Romanowski at Paul Stubblebine Mastering
