I've just assembled my first Bottlehead kit - a Quickie.  It's great.  I enjoyed building it and now listening to it. It was a great learning experience.  I'm interested in seeing what improvements will come from changing the pot, capacitors, etc.  I have the PJCCS assembled, but want to get used to the standard version before changing anything (other than the tubes - it's now running some NOS Mullards).  How far do people think the design can/should sensibly be pushed?  It seems to me to be pointless spending hundreds of dollars on this if that money would be better spent on building a Foreplay - is that broadly right?

Biggest improvement is reported to be the PJCCS.  It should reveal more of the more subtle upgrades like the volume pot and capacitors.  My opinion is the capacitors are much greater than the volume pot but the pot is also an improvement.  Better yet, try a stepped attenuator.

There are a few tricked out Quickies posted here that compare in price to the FP III.  But I couldn't speak to the sonic comparison.  Maybe Xcortes will chime in?

Grainger - thanks for the reply.  I have a PEC 1Meg linear pot (from a previous project), and will try that first with a 110k law-faking resistor, but will probably move to a stepped attenuator. I live in Hong Kong, and so I can pick up different caps, etc. fairly easily (although they aren't always particularly cheap).  I think I'm going to have a go at re-working the top plate too (to move the inputs/outputs to the back).
