Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone has tried using a Quickie with a gainclone amp? I was thinking of building a LM3886 based gainclone and getting a quickie to use as a pre for a fun and inexpensive DIY setup. Anyone tried this?

Thanks,
Dave

Hello,

Yes.... and the combo sounds excellent. I built the Brian Bell LM3886 Chip Amp (as monobocks). I finished the project just after Christmas. I have put in many hours of listening and I'm loving the combo. The 3886 with the Foreplay III is a tricky combo because the sweetest whispers make for a too soft-too loud situation. Might be a good excuse to upgrade to Goldpoint attenuators.

Stu,

There is an easy answer to the "Hair Trigger Syndrome," a series resistor.  It is best to use all of the SW range.  That is, using it to 12:00 isn't as effective as using it to 3:00.  You just get so many more steps that way.
